What I Sell
I specialize in antique clothing, embroidery, needlework, and various antique sewing tools and accessories made from the 17th through the mid-19th centuries. My collection includes antique embroideries, samplers, embroidered clothing accessories, lace, sewing implements, boxes, winders, knitting sheaths, and clamps. My customers range from first-time purchasers to advanced collectors, as well as those in the trade, museums, and other non-profit institutions interested in antique textiles and ephemera.
Philosophy
Antiques are concrete memories. They embody the individuals who crafted them, the people who used them, and all those who appreciated them throughout generations. One of the joys of dealing in antiques, such as antique clothing, antique embroideries, and antique textiles, is discovering the rich histories behind these objects and sharing them with prospective customers. These narratives may illuminate less-traveled paths in the historical record, connect disparate ideas about people and cultures, and reveal social, religious, and ideological forces at play in the lives of the makers and users. Even antique sewing tools and ephemera carry significant stories that can transform the meaning of an object and how we perceive it.
About Kathy Staples
For over forty years, Kathy Staples has focused on the social and cultural history of Europe and the Americas as expressed through textiles, antique clothing, and related crafts. She has written, lectured, and curated exhibitions on diverse topics, including weaving and needlework in pre-contact Ecuador and colonial Mexico; the production and use of antique embroideries in Stuart England; sampler-making in South Carolina, Georgia, and the whaling towns of Massachusetts; and the relationship between fashion, consumption, and antique sewing tools in colonial America.
Kathy has collaborated with several esteemed institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Charleston Museum, Historic Charleston Foundation, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, The New Bedford Whaling Museum, The Georgia Museum of Art, and the former Textile Museum in Washington DC.
She is the author of numerous articles in both popular and scholarly publications, has written two books on samplers and historic needlework, and co-authored a volume on colonial dress that often discusses antique textiles and ephemera.
Kathy holds an undergraduate degree in religion from Lawrence University and a graduate degree in anthropology from the University of Texas, Austin.

Payment
I accept as forms of payment personal checks, cashier’s checks, and all major credit cards for purchases of antique clothing, antique embroideries, antique sewing tools, and other antique textiles. Purchased item(s) will be shipped once charges are accepted or your personal check has cleared the bank. All South Carolina based sales require a 6% sales tax unless the purchaser has a valid South Carolina sales tax number.
Interested in spreading out your payment? I can work with you to customize interest-free installment payments ranging from three to six months on most items, including antique ephemera.
IMPORTANT NOTICE regarding antique ivory: Offerings may contain animal material that may be restricted under federal, state and/or local law. Those items will not be available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, New York, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington.

Shipping and Handling
Shipping and handling fees are added to the purchase price of items, including exquisite antique clothing and delicate antique embroideries. Any handling charges cover only packing and shipping materials, usually applied to large or bulky items like antique sewing tools. Rest assured, all items, including fine antique textiles and unique ephemera, are shipped insured via Priority Mail through USPS, unless other arrangements are made.
Returns
Shopping online can sometimes be challenging, especially when it comes to items like antique clothing, antique embroideries, or antique textiles. Pictures often fail to capture the true essence of these unique objects. I want you to be completely satisfied with every purchase you make from me.
I guarantee that each item, whether it’s an antique sewing tool or a delicate piece of ephemera, will be accurately described on my sales receipt. In the unlikely event that you are not happy with your purchase, I will accept returns for a full refund of the purchase price. Please contact me within three days of receiving your item via phone or email.
Please note that all sales to the trade are final.
If you decide to return an item, it must be in “as sent” condition, carefully packed, and insured for its full value. It should be shipped back to me via two-day service. A refund will be processed once I confirm that the item is returned in the same condition as it was sent. All shipping and insurance costs are the responsibility of the purchaser and are non-refundable unless the item was misrepresented.
