What I Sell
I specialize in embroidery and needlework and sewing tools and accessories made in the 17th through the mid-19th centuries. These include samplers and needlework pictures, embroidered clothing accessories, lace, sewing implements, boxes, winders, knitting sheaths, and clamps. My customers include first-time purchasers as well as advanced collectors, those in the trade, and museums and other non-profit institutions.
Philosophy
Antiques are concrete memories. They embody the folks who made them, the folks who used them, and all the folks who enjoyed them down the generations. One of the joys of dealing in antiques is discovering the his- and her-stories of these objects and sharing them with prospective customers. These stories may illuminate less traveled paths in the historical record, connect disparate ideas about people and cultures, and reveal social, religious, and ideological forces at work in the life the maker and /or owners and users. Whatever their subject, these stories have the power to transform the meaning of an object and how we view it.
About Kathy Staples
For over forty years, Kathy Staples has focused on the social and cultural history of Europe and the Americas as expressed through textiles and related craft. She has written, lectured, and curated exhibitions on such diverse topics as weaving and needlework in pre-contact Equador and colonial Mexico; production and use of embroidery in Stuart England; sampler-making in South Carolina, Georgia, and the whaling towns of Massachusetts; and the relationship between fashion and consumption in colonial America.
Among the museums she has worked with are the Metropolitan Museum of At, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Charleston Museum, Historic Charleston Foundation, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, The New Bedford Whaling Museum, The Georgia Museum of Art, and the former Textile Museum in Washington DC.
She has authored numerous articles in popular and scholarly publications, written two books on samplers and historic needlework, and co-authored a volume on colonial dress.
Kathy holds an undergraduate degree in in religion from Lawrence University and a graduate degree in anthropology from the University of Texas, Austin.

Payment
I accept as forms of payment personal checks, cashier’s checks, and all major credit cards. Purchased item(s) will be shipped once charges are accepted or your personal check has cleared the bank. All South Carolina based sales require 6% sales tax unless the purchaser has a valid South Carolina sales tax number.
Want to pay in installments? I can work with you to tailor interest-free installment payments of from three to six months on most items.
IMPORTANT NOTICE regarding antique ivory: Offerings may contain animal material that may be restricted under federal, state and/or local law. Those items will not available for shipment internationally, nor within the USA to California, New York, Nevada, Hawaii, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington.

Shipping and Handling
Shipping and handling fees are paid in addition to the purchase price of items. Any handling charges include only packing and shipping materials, usually only for large or bulky items. All items are shipped insured, Priority Mail, via USPS unless other arrangements are made.
Returns
It is sometimes difficult to buy something online. Pictures are not the same as viewing an object in person. I want you to be completely happy with everything you purchase from me.
I guarantee every item that I sell to be as described on my sales receipt. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your purchase, I will take it back for a full refund of its purchase price. You must contact me within three days of receipt via phone or email.
All sales to the trade are final.
If you return an item, the object must be in “as sent” condition, properly packed, insured for full value, and shipped to me via two-day service. The purchase price will be refunded upon my determination that the item is returned in the same condition as it was sent. All shipping and insurance costs are the responsibility of the purchaser and are not refundable unless an object was misrepresented.
